New Orleans - A federal jury has told a judge that they are having difficulty reaching a verdict in the trial of a former BP engineer charged with trying to obstruct a probe of the company's 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

In a note Tuesday read aloud in court by US District Judge Stanwood Duval Jr., jurors said they have been “at a standstill” and deadlocked for several hours.

Duval didn't immediately decide how to respond to the note after consulting with attorneys on the case.

Jurors have been deliberating for more than eight hours since they heard closing arguments Monday by Justice Department prosecutors and a lawyer for Kurt Mix, who is charged with two counts of obstruction of justice.

Their deliberations resumed Tuesday morning. - Sapa-AP
