Lily Mine: new collapse halts rescue op

Rescue operations have been temporarily halted at Vantage Goldfields Lily Mine after another section caved-in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to individuals who are part of the rescue mission, a loud bang was heard on Friday night.

Three mineworkers, Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi, Solomon Nyerende have been trapped in lamp room container for 8 days which sunk into hole caused by the collapse.

The mine has not reported any new developments since the discovery of a tyre believed to have been on the surface of the mine prior to the collapse.

Meanwhile, Minister of Minerals and Resources Mosebenzi Zwane is expected to visit the mine today to give an update on the progress of the search and rescue mission.

Zwane previously visited the mine on the day of the collapse and said safety regulations in the mining industry would need to be reevaluated to prevent further tragedies.

EFF secretary-general Godrich Gardee will also visit the mine on Saturday afternoon.

Journalists, who were stationed at the gate all week, have now been allowed inside the mine premises.
