Johannesburg - The South African Post Office has denied reports that its bank accounts have been frozen.

Administrator Simo Lushaba said on Thursday: “Some media have produced factually incorrect reports which state that the bank accounts of the SA Post Office have been frozen; these reports are not founded on any truth.

“Unfortunately such unverified and reckless reports have a huge adverse impact on the stability, primarily amongst our employees. Additionally, as part of the entire new strategic trajectory, we are talking to various stakeholders who have a role to play in helping us turn the company around.”

The post office hit headlines recently when it emerged that South African Airways (SAA) was refusing to carry overseas mail for the post office because of unpaid bills.

At the time the post office cited cash flow problems, strike action and operational difficulties as part of the reasons for non payment of bills.

Lushaba said that headlines, especially factually incorrect ones, had a huge potential to stymie endeavours to bring the SA Post Office back to profitability and sustainability.

Lushaba said that the headlines about the freezing of their accounts were erroneous and had “unfortunately created irreparable damage to their various initiatives to restore customer confidence as well as to improve their ability to meet their statutory mandate”.

“I have continuously confirmed the fact that the SA Post Office is currently facing a negative financial position. But this is not the end of the story, as with committed government support, we have taken a holistic view of the entire business in our quest to remodel our operations for agility and responsiveness,” Lushaba said.
