Johannesburg - Eskom on Thursday said it had electrified more than 38 000 households in the first three months of the 2016 financial year, exceeding its target by more than 3 000 households.

The Eastern Cape was the province with most electricity connections at 9 638, followed by Limpopo at 6 913, while the least connections were in Gauteng at 466 households.

“Since the beginning of this financial year, 1 April to 30 June, Eskom has electrified over 38 612 households against a target of 35 059 household connections,” Eskom said in a statement.

“This achievement has been attained through the implementation of the new Electrification Performance Centre (EPC) established at our head office in Megawatt Park, which focuses solely on the delivery of electrification.”

The national power supplier said it was very pleased that all the nine Distribution Operating Units had achieved their targets.

“We congratulate all employees involved in ensuring that this milestone was reached and urge them all to continue with their phenomenal performance for the next coming quarters,” Eskom said.

The Distribution Division within Eskom is responsible for the national implementation of the country’s electrification programme, along with municipalities and the Department of Energy.

Eskom said it was gearing itself up for even better results in the next two quarters, July to December, during which, focus would be placed on infrastructure to be built while continuing to electrify households across the country.

“The results of the first quarter are a clear indication that Eskom has changed gear and has set itself up to deliver on this service,” Eskom said.
