Cape Town - Pick n Pay will donate a day's profit to commemorate the anniversary of former president Nelson Mandela's death, the retailer said on Thursday.

“As we approach the first anniversary of Mr Mandela’s passing, we wanted to give our customers and staff the same opportunity again to join us in commemorating Madiba’s life and contributing to his legacy,” CEO Richard Brasher said.

All profits on sales will go to the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Trust.

Mandela died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, on December 5 last year.

The shopping chain donated R5 million when he was buried on December 15 last year. The money was used to contribute towards building and equipping the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital in Johannesburg, a project that was his last wish. Construction started in April.

The hospital's CEO Sibongile Mkhabela said R580m had thus far been raised against a target of R1 billion.

“The hospital trust looks forward for more contributions to meet the needed balance and keep the legacy of Madiba alive. It is hoped that the hospital will open its doors in 2016.” - Sapa
