Telecommunications company Telkom on Thursday introduced a service that combines fixed-line and mobile communications.

“South African businesses striving towards increases productivity and efficiency seek the convenience of both fixed-line and mobile communications,” managing director of Telkom Business Brian Armstrong said at the launch of Telkom Business Mobile in Johannesburg.

Research had shown that more than 80 percent of mobile calls were made from a fixed location, he said.

With a choice between routing the call via fixed lines or mobile, costs could be lowered.

Telkom's 140,000km of fixed line infrastructure in South Africa would allow it to be the first operator to bundle mobile communications with its existing fixed-line offerings.
