Kenya invited bids yesterday for the construction of two electricity generation plants to supply a combined 60 megawatts from geothermal power. The state-run Geothermal Development Company said in a notice in a local daily newspaper that the winning firms would be expected to finance the plants and complete building them by the end of next year. Independent producers that were selected would be offered a power purchase agreement with distributor Kenya Power, the company said. Endowed with vast geothermal energy resources in the Rift Valley, Kenya wants to expand its total power generation capacity by 5 000MW by 2017 from about 1 700MW now. – Reuters
