SA 2014 maize plantings at 2.71m hectares

Johannesburg - South African maize farmers have planted 2.71 million hectares for 2014 compared to 2.78 million hectares last year, a government agency said on Tuesday.

The Crop Estimates Committee said the preliminary area cultivated under maize includes 1.571 million hectares of white maize and 1.139 million hectares of yellow maize.

The committee raised its 2013 wheat crop estimate to 1.795 million tonnes from the 1.751 million tonnes seen in the previous forecast. - Reuters
