South Africa cut its forecast of maize output for the 2011/12 season to 11.12 million tonnes on Tuesday, exactly in line with market expectations, from 11.3 million tonnes in the previous forecast.

The maize crop will consist of an estimated 6.415 million tonnes of white maize and 4.705 million tonnes of yellow, the government's Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said.

The estimate was in line with market expectations of 11.12 million tonnes, according to a Reuters poll.

The committee left unchanged its estimate for the area cultivated under maize at 2.7 million hectares.

The CEC also said South African farmers intend to plant 547,200 hectares of wheat this year, up from 604,700 hectares in 2011. - Reuters
