President Jacob Zuma arrived in Seoul on Wednesday, ready to attend the 5th G20 summit due to take place on Thursday and Friday.
The Seoul summit is the second such meeting of the G20 for 2010 following the June meeting in Toronto.
A statement from the presidency said that the summit will focus on building a framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth, on strengthening the international financial regulatory system as well as creating global financial safety nets and modernising the international financial institutions.
“South Africa participates in the G20 summit within the context of contributing to and strengthening the multilateral system to ensure fair and effective responses to the challenges confronting the world today,” the statement said.
“South Africa is part of the G20 as is systematically important for the country, with national economic interests to promote.
“The G20 continues to play a key role in responding to the global economic crisis.”
It is expected that Zuma will attend a welcome reception hosted by President Lee Muyng-bak in honour of G20 leaders.
