Cape Town - Democratic Alliance MPand spokesperson on trade and industry Geordin Hill Lewis has on Friday called for parliament to debate the newly promulgated Black economic Empowerment Codes of Good Practice.

This follows government issuing a clarification notice on the codes, which came into effect on May 1.

The clarification stats that aspects of broad based black ownership, such as employee share ownership schemes and community trusts will now earn only 3 out of 25 points on the new scorecard.

“The veil has finally fallen. Instead of implementing Black Economic Empowerment that is truly broad based to empower the millions of poor South Africans trapped in unemployment, the ANC remains fixated on further enriching those few who have already been empowered,” Hill Lewis said in a statement.

Earlier on Friday, the National Union of Mineworkers expressed disappointment at the clarification calling it “backward and regressive”
