Johannesburg - Tax Ombud retired judge Bernard Makgabo Ngoepe’s term of office was extended for a period of three years by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, National Treasury said on Tuesday.

“The Tax Ombud plays a critical role in South Africa’s tax system and, in particular, in ensuring fairness and procedural correctness. Judge Ngoepe has led the office with great distinction and integrity over the past three years,” National Treasury said in a statement.

“His impartiality and effectiveness has inspired confidence and trust in our tax system. The minister wishes Judge Ngoepe everything of the best as they strengthen this vital institution.”

Ngoepe’s new term of office would commence on October 1.
