Johannesburg - Transnet has awarded a contract valued at R15.5 billion to nine companies to cover the parastatal's fuel requirements, Public Enterprise Minister Malusi Gigaba announced on Thursday.

“This day will go down in history as the day black economic empowerment took a giant leap forward,” he said in Johannesburg.

“Today we are proud to announce that Transnet has awarded (the contract)... over the next five years to black- and women-owned companies.”

Gigaba said eight of the companies were 100 percent black-owned.
