A financial planner with the Certified Financial Planner accreditation who is professionally bound to act in your best interests is worth his or her weight in gold. The body to which such planners belong, the Financial Planning Institute (FPI), held its annual conference this week, at which it announced the Financial Planner of the Year for 2016: Bruce Fleming of Citadel Wealth in Cape Town.

This Saturday, PERSONAL FINANCE profiles the three Financial Planner of the Year finalists and reports on important issues raised at the conference, such as:

* Should you use a robo-adviser?

* Should you pay an adviser for wealth management or advice?

* If an adviser asks you to fill in a questionnaire to determine your risk profile, is he or she doing you a disservice?
