South Africa powered to a mammoth 309-run victory over Australia in Perth today on the back of another excellent performance by the team’s bowling unit.

The victory clinched a 1-0 series triumph, the second in succession by the Proteas in Australia. A drawn series would have been enough for the South Africans to retain their top ranking in the Test arena, but their clinical win with more than a day to spare reinforced their No 1 status.

Australia, set 632 to win, began the fourth day today on 40/0 and were dealt an early blow when opener David Warner was caught off the second ball of the morning.

The Proteas bowlers were irrepressible, all of them playing a part in the steady disintegration of the opposition. Spinner Robin Peterson claimed the wickets of Ricky Ponting, captain Michael Clarke and Matthew Wade for a match haul of six wickets.

Paceman Dale Steyn finished it off, though, in the final session, breaking an 87-run stand for the 10th wicket. Steyn had earlier got rid of Michael Hussey and Ed Cowan, and finished with seven wickets in the match.
