ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa said the party was currently preoccupied with electing councils in the 157 municipalities it had won across the country.

He said the ANC was still in negotiations with other smaller parties and where agreement could not be reached, the party was prepared to take its place on the opposition benches.

Kodwa said the decline of support for the ANC in the metros was a major setback for the national democratic revolution and a setback for national development.

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe also seemed resigned to the party’s new fate as the opposition in some areas.

Meanwhile, the ANC’s allies in the SA Communist Party did not take kindly to yesterday's developments, and lashed out at the DA and EFF.
