The brutal rape and murder of Anene Booysen had caused shock and outrage among the community, a Bredasdorp magistrate said yesterday in refusing bail to one of the men arrested for the crime.

Jonathan Davids, bowed his head and stared in disbelief yesterday, a decision which shocked his supporters, who had thought he would be set free.

Accused number 2, Johannes Kana (in orange shirt) also appeared in court, but his bail application has not yet been heard. The state told the court that Kana had confessed to raping Booysen, but denied killing her.
