A four-year-old boy was shot and killed, allegedly by gangsters, and in a separate incident two men were also shot and killed in Delft.

Two more people are recovering in hospital after suffering gunshot wounds.

Meanwhile, a little girl has died in a fire in Gatesville.

The shootings have left the community shocked and living in fear. The child, whose name has not been released, was shot in the stomach when unknown suspects opened fire while he was outside his home on Delft Main Road on Sunday.

The boy was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

Two other people, aged 20 and 27, are recovering in hospital. One of the men was identified as the boy’s uncle.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said cases of murder and attempted murder were under investigation.

The Cape Times tried to interview the boy’s family, but was told by neighbours the family was at hospital.

A Delft resident who was at the scene said it was “raining bullets” and the suspects had fled on foot.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the resident said it was not the first time shots had been fired at the house.

“On Friday, we heard shots being fired but no one was injured. On Sunday I was inside my house when I heard shots being fired. When I came out, there were a lot of people and bullet shells all over.”

Residents in Schubert Street, Delft, woke up to find that two men, aged 17 and 19, had been murdered.

Meanwhile, seven-year-old Ada Ncube died during a fire
at her mother’s backyard house on Shaanti Crescent in Gatesville.

Ada was sleeping alone when the fire broke out just after 8pm. Her father, Brighton Ncube, had gone to fetch her mother Roppe from work in Mowbray.

It is suspected that the fire was started by a TV circuit-breaker.

Ada’s heartbroken grandmother, Khanyisa Ncube, said her daughter-in-law (Roppe) was too distraught to be interviewed. The Ncubes were renting the backyard house.

Ada would have turned eight on June 10.

“Brighton went to fetch Ada’s mother but when he got to her workplace, he was told that Roppe had taken a colleague to hospital. On his way he got a call that there was a fire in the house,” said Khanyisa.

She said the Grade 2 pupil had already been declared dead on the scene when she arrived from Khayelitsha.

“It’s heartbreaking because she visited me at the weekend. And no one knew it was the last time I would see her. She was my only grandchild.

"We will be making funeral arrangements soon because they are from Zimbabwe,” said Khanyisa.

Police have opened an inquest docket.
