It’s a new year and a new theme. The 2016 J&B Met will offer the trendy and would-be fashionistas the chance to add their creative talents to their “rare blend” theme.

If people have still not decided on what to wear tomorrow, the best option is to pair an outfit that best shows off what is rare.

Women can wear a leather and silk ensemble, or consider pulling out their LBD (little black dress) and freshening it up with over-the-top fake flowers.

Don’t discount denim, and if there is still time to find a denim tuxedo, or to really stand out of the crowd, because that is what being rare is all about, bring back the neon 1980s, with the big hair and hooped earrings.

Promoting South African fashion brands is a passion of fashion activist and blogger Tara Johannisen, who showcased some of her favourite outfits created by up-and-coming designers.

Dark glamour and avant-garde designs from second-year students Salva Dembele Phillipa Crooks and Danmari Wege, from the Design Academy of Fashion in Woodstock, took the LBD to even newer heights.

Another highlight was a casual chic Asian-inspired emperor suit, a comfortable look that would work perfectly with gladiator flats as stylish comfort is key.

Many fashionistas have made the fatal mistake of wearing stilettos to the Met. This is a big no-no because grass and heels (and alcoholic drinks) don’t go together.

According to Johannisen, accessories are key to perfecting any look; she is always keen on wearing locally designed pieces.

Don’t forget the all-important race-day accessory – a pair of sunglasses – and keep this stylish.

One of the event’s biggest highlights is the “Most Elegant Couple” competition.

Show up in your dazzling, “rare blend” outfit and you might just get chosen to enter on the day and find yourself strutting off with an array of incredible prizes.
