THE SA Weather Service has issued a fire warning as temperatures are expected to reach up to 39ºC on Friday in some parts of the province.

“Hot and dry weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over the West Coast district, Cape Winelands, the Karoo, as well as the interior of the Northern Cape.

“A heatwave with persistently high temperatures is expected in places over the West Coast district from (today), including the Karoo areas and Cape Winelands from Saturday until Monday,” the warning read.

In Cape Town the temperature is expected to reach 30ºC today and in Paarl the mercury is expected to rise to 37ºC, while in Malmesbury it will reach 39ºC.

On Saturday the temperature in the CBD will reach 31ºC and is expected to soar again on Sunday to 35ºC.

The City has previously appealed to residents to stay hydrated and keep out of direct sun as it could lead to the swelling of ankles, skin inflammation, dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea and fainting.

Residents can keep cool by visiting local swimming pools.

Staying indoors in a cool room will also mitigate the effects of heat, especially when having a fan nearby.

It is best to put the fan in front of the window to allow the hot air to blow out.

Having thick, dark curtains will also help keep out the heat.
