A MFULENI man became the latest victim of a suspected mob justice attack in the city yesterday, bringing the number to more than 20 incidents since last year.

The Khayelitsha cluster recorded 18 mob justice attacks between January and October last year. Four suspected criminals were stoned to death and set alight in Masiphumelele last year.

In February, a 17-year-old was killed in another mob justice-related incident in
Khayelitsha.

In May, a man was set alight in Philippi, while a 15-year-old was stoned to death in Delft in June.

A resident allegedly said the dead man was a known thief.

“We received a tip-off that he had just robbed someone. “Cellphones and a bag were found in his possession. He couldn’t explain when asked how he got them,” said the resident.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said a case of murder was being investigated after the body of an unidentified male in his twenties was found lying in an open field next to the flats in Mfuleni.

“According to the reports, this morning (yesterday) police attended to a scene of an unidentified male who had injuries on his head and face. The victim is in his twenties and was wearing blue jeans pants and a green T-shirt.

“The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”
