Beauregard Tromp, a senior field producer at e-news Africa, has been named the next South African Nieman Fellow who will attend Harvard University in the United States.

Tromp is the 58th South African to be awarded the prestigious mid-year fellowship, following previous Niemans such as the late Percy Qoboza of The World, Ton Vosloo, chairman of Naspers, Barney Mthomboti, editor of the Financial Mail and Tim du Plessis, head of Afrikaans News.

Tromp, a former award-winning journalist at The Star, is one of 24 international and American journalists in the Nieman class at Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Announcing the names of the 24 journalists in the class, Nieman Foundation curator Ann Marie Lipinski said: “This is an outstanding group of journalists poised to have a growing influence on their news organisations and on journalism more broadly. They represent a wide range of interests and backgrounds but share an intense commitment to using their year at Harvard to gain new knowledge, strengthen their work and enhance the prospects for journalism overall.”

The group, 12 journalists from the United States and 12 from other countries, work across all media platforms as reporters, editors, radio and television broadcasters, photojournalists and digital media pioneers.

The fellowship allows accomplished and promising journalists a year of study at Harvard and time to pursue individual areas of inquiry as well as integrated class work to enhance fellows’ expertise, according to a press release.

Tromp’s fellowship is supported by the Nieman Society of Southern Africa.
