AT JUST 30 years old, media personality Roxy Burger already has two decades of experience in the entertainment industry.

Over the past 20 years, the blonde beauty has dabbled in and conquered the worlds of television, radio and fashion.

After years of hard work, she currently hosts two prestigious shows: local lifestyle show Top Billing and reality show Strictly Come Dancing.

She is also a producer of and hosts 5FM TV on YouTube, and is a celebrity blogger.

Burger’s dominance of the entertainment industry began at just 10 when she started presenting M-Net’s then children’s programme KTV.

“I used to be a huge KTV fan, and after watching many Saturday morning Power Editions, I decided that this was what I wanted to do, I just knew.”

But Burger, who was also a celebrity contestant on the M-Net reality competition Survivor South Africa: Maldives in 2011, told The Star that this initial venture into the entertainment business was a challenging time as she
had to balance her job as well as school and her adolescent life.

She admits that it was her parents who kept her grounded and focused on her studies, but there were also some sacrifices made along the way.

“It was stressful at times but it wasn’t really a choice, as my dad made it clear that if my grades dropped at any stage, I would have to give it up.

“Some tough decisions towards matric had to be made and I had to give up ballet and modern dancing, which I’d been doing for 13 years.”

Burger said it was her consistency and the rise of social media that helped her transition from a child star to a now recognised leader in the entertainment world.

“I think the rise of social media was useful in showing people my love of fashion, for example, and evolving away from being a kids’ presenter.”

She adds that throughout the years, she also learnt that “what’s meant to be will be, and sometimes a job you really want isn’t meant for you”.

With this mantra in mind, Burger is now taking her accolades in her stride and enjoys all her TV and radio duties.

“I enjoy them all for different reasons,” she insists.

“I get to be my most creative self when I’m producing 5FM TV, while on Top Billing I get to travel and wear amazing outfits.”

Burger is also a fashionista, and with her creative style choices, she has often made the best-dressed list at the glamorous social events she attends.

She reckons that it’s her own boredom which ensures that she steps up her fashion game.

“I get bored really quickly, so I like to mix it up.”

Burger, who is an avid blogger, also uses her platform roxyburger.co.za to share fashion advice and tips while also writing about other issues close to her heart, such as design and travel.

“I felt like I needed a longer-form platform to express myself.”

“I’ve always loved writing and even took journalism for two years at varsity. I pretty much write about anything I love.”

Although her several entertainment jobs keep her busy, Burger says she is most passionate about her family and that she sets time aside in her busy schedule to spend it with them.

With such a hectic career, Burger is adamant that her future goals are to be happy and content. “I think that to achieve contentment in life shows success.”

Her advice to others who want to follow in her footsteps is simple: “Don’t compare yourself to others. Run your own race and be consistent.”
