Dam levels are at 24.5%, which is enough water for about 129 days, the City says.

Water consumption is at 801 million litres a day – 101 million more than the target of 700 million, the City said yesterday.

The City has thanked water-saving residents and businesses, but stressed that water consumption must be lowered immediately.

Mayco member for water and waste services Xanthea Limberg said the City is expanding existing pressure-reducing programmes, which may result in intermittent supply in areas.

“Consumption patterns and dam levels over the coming weeks will determine how the pressure reduction programme will be rolled out further. The City will communicate timeously about any decision in this regard,” Limberg said.

This week the names of residents and businesses which are issued with fines will be made public.

Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille and deputy mayor Ian Neilson are calling businesses, hotels and government departments unannounced to check up on their water use.

De Lille and her representatives have started engaging high water users who have been identified through their water accounts and January 2017 consumption.

A month-on-month comparison will be made on the water usage, which will inform further action, the City said.

This week the City programmed consumption levels on electronic freeway signboards, showing how much water the metro has left .

This is an effort to reinforce the warning that saving water is the best contingency measure in a time of drought.
