Two horses were killed during a head-on collision between two trucks off the N1 at the R304 Klipheuwel off-ramp yesterday.

Provincial Traffic chief Kenny Africa said the horses were crossing the road when the trucks were approaching in opposite directions.

“The two trucks were coming in opposite directions and both were trying to avoid the horses, when they collided. In the process two of the horses died, while one sustained serious injuries,” he said.

No motorists or passengers were hurt.

Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham said the owner of the horses had arranged for the removal of his animals and the treatment of the injured horse before they could arrive on the scene.

“We received a call from Law Enforcement at around 4.20am reporting that two horses had died and that one horse was injured on the R304 direction Malmesbury, opposite County Fair in the Kraaifontein area.

“We dispatched an inspector but, before they could get to the site of the accident, we received a call from Law Enforcement to say that the owner was on the scene and was arranging for the removal of the bodies and the treatment of the injured horse,” said Abraham.

“When we received the report, nobody was available on the scene to give us any insights,” she said.
