Religious leaders, part of a 50-strong entourage, prayed for rain on Table Mountain in an inter-faith gathering on Thursday afternoon.

The City has been implementing a number of interventions to address the drought, which is a result of inadequate rainfall the past two winters.

Representatives from the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), the Western Cape Christian Ministers’ Association, the Khoisan Griqua Royal House, the Bahaí Community of South Africa, the Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Centre, and the Hindu and Jewish communities all lead prayers on Table Mountain.

Before the prayers, Mayor Patricia De Lille addressed the audience.

"Climate change can be felt," she said, once again urging residents to conserve water as this has been the worst drought in 100 years.

De Lille explained that the City of Cape Town has invested millions into the issue of water leaks.

Elizabeth Petersen, founder of South African Faith and Family Institute, said that the gathering was not a stage production and asked people to refrain from clapping.

Religious leaders had no longer than five minutes to pray.

The MJC declared that on June 4 there will be a day of prayer. "All the animals and creatures need the water."

Rev Madelyn Messelaar from the Khoisan Griqua Royal House experienced what some called a "powerful prayer".

Mayco member Suzette Little concluded the event and said "you can't conserve water when it is done."
