Cape Town - One person has died and 19 others injured after a taxi and a bakkie collided at the Potsdam Road and Silverstone Road crossing in Killarney Gardens on Friday afternoon.

According to ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Huyssteen, the accident happened shortly after 4 pm.

"When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene they found a taxi lying on its side and a bakkie lying on its roof. Upon further assessment, paramedics found two people who had to be extricated from the bakkie.

"Unfortunately, one of the patients had sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. One other person from the taxi also had to be extricated by fire and rescue using the jaws of life," said Van Huyssteen.

Nineteen people, many of them children, sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious and were taken to hospital for further medical care.

The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are being investigated.
