THE stench of liquor filled the evidence management centre depot in Belhar as police poured about 10 000 litres of confiscated alcohol into disposal tanks yesterday.

The depot was temporarily transformed into a liquor warehouse, with journalists and the police blocking their noses because of the smell.

Police provincial acting commissioner Major-General Thembisile Patekile said the liquor was seized from illegal shebeens across the province. He said it was a very difficult operation as they faced resistance from sellers.

“Our members were attacked and suffered injuries, while their vehicles were damaged.”

Patekile said it was vital to continue the operation as illegal outlets mushroomed.

“Today we close this and that one opens tomorrow. And the problem with them is that they serve underage children as they don’t comply with the liquor act,” he said.

He urged the community to take it on themselves to make sure these outlets were closed.

“The community must always make sure shebeens comply with the liquor act. If they suspect someone is selling alcohol illegally, they must report it to the police.”
