PRETORIA: The South African population was getting sicker, with patients suffering from chronic diseases seeing doctors at least four times a year.

Private health sector experts heard the high prevalence of chronic diseases among patients was a major concern.

Industry stakeholders told a conference held in Centurion that drastic measures had to be taken to change the situation.

“Diabetes is on the rise and HIV on the decline,” said Professor Manie de Klerk from the MAG/MMI Health Centre of Excellence.

There was an agreement that systematic changes had to be put in place to change things.
