SANS SOUCI Girls’ High School parents are determined to see speedy change at the school, despite what they have called attempts by the school governing body (SGB) to derail the process.

The SGB was accused of trying to sabotage the process of change at the school after it had sent a message to parents, stating they were not allowed to use the school for a planned meeting this week.

SGB chairperson William Lawrence advised parents that their planned meeting was not a Sans Souci school-sanctioned meeting.

“The premises are not available for an unofficial school meeting. The SGB will be in touch with parents, learners and staff soon,” Lawrence’s message read.

Hours before the meeting, it was announced an alternative venue had been found in Athlone.

Greshen Chetty, of Access to Justice, representing pupils in mediation, said a small group of parents were to attend the meeting. He said Lawrence’s SMS had caused confusion.

“The parents are of greater resolve than they were before, despite obstacles being put in their way."

Lawrence did not respond to requests for comment
yesterday.

Provincial Education Department spokesperson Paddy Attwell said neither MEC Debbie Schäfer nor senior management had agreed to a meeting organised by outside parties at the school without the SGB’s permission.

“Nevertheless, these parties are welcome to organise a meeting using other venues of their choice. The WCED has offered to help inform parents of these meetings as required,” Attwell said.

The department has placed principal Charmaine Murray at the Metro Central Education District office for the
duration of the investigation, he said.
