POLICE are investigating a case of culpable homicide following the death of an 18-year-old and injuries to 10 youngsters and an adult after a taxi carrying them overturned on the M3 at Paradise Road in Claremont.

“Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,” said SAPS media spokesperson Nloxiso Rwexana, confirming the accident.

Jessica Shelver, spokesperson for Education MEC Debbie Schäfer, said the department had established that the deceased was a former pupil of Khayamandi High School in Kraaifontein.

“They were reportedly in a hired taxi attending a birthday party last night,” she said.

ER24 Emergency Room Services spokesperson Chitra Bodasing added that ER24, Life Healthcare, Metro, Fire and Rescue, and other services had found the taxi on its roof.

She said the injured were treated and taken by various private and metro services to Groote Schuur and Victoria hospitals.

One of the victims, a man believed to be between 30 and 40, was in a critical condition and was treated by ER24 paramedics before being transported to Groote Schuur Hospital, said Bodasing. ER24 also took four other youths to Victoria Hospital.

The cause of the accident was not known and further investigations were being conducted, she added.
