A man, who allegedly tried to hi-jack a motorist with a toy gun, was critically injured in Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon, after he was shot in the chest.

Johannesburg Metro police department (JMPD) spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the driver was travelling in a Fiat at the corner of Lilian Ngoyi and Pixley Ka Seme street.

He said the 25-year-old man attempted to hi-jack the motorist with a toy gun when he was shot.

"A second suspect managed to escape and the injured suspect was treated by paramedics on the scene," Minnaar said.

"The incident will be investigated by the [ South African Police Service] SAPS."
