Durban - The shocked family of the Verulam businessman found strangled and buried beneath a pile of cement pockets at his place of work have remembered him as a man who gave generously to worthy causes.

Govindarajoo Ganas Chinnian was found under 15 pockets of cement inside a shipping container, from where he ran a hardware business, C and L Hardware, outside his home.

His son, Pragasen Chinnian, said his father was a generous person who always contributed to temples, churches and mosques.

“He helped many organisations by sponsoring groceries, building material and cash donations.”

Chinnian, 63, was born and brought up in Verulam. Prem Balram, spokesman for private security company, Reaction Unit South Africa, said the family had been looking for Chinnian and thought he had left the Coroba Gardens premises with a client when they found the containers locked on Tuesday night.

The lock to the container Chinnian was found in, had a piece of a match stick in it to prevent it from being unlocked.

Balram said they broke the lock and opened the container.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, said Chinnian was strangled by two men known to him.

A case of murder had been opened at the Verulam police station.

Chinnian leaves his wife Rognie, five children and eight grandchildren.

He will be cremated at the Verulam Crematorium on Friday.
