A 16-year-old schoolboy collapsed during rugby practice at a sports field in Scottsville and later died at a Pietermaritzburg hospital.

ER24 Spokesperson Annine Dormehl said on Wednesday afternoon paramedics found the boy on the field, where it is believed he collapsed during rugby practice at Alexandra High School.

"CPR had to be performed and the patient was placed on a ventilator before being transported to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg," said Dormehl in a terse statement late Wednesday.

"Doctors continued resuscitating the patient at the hospital, but unfortunately nothing could be done for the teenager and the patient was declared dead just before 18h00 this evening.

The name of the dead schoolboy has been withheld and police are investigating.
