Police have warned people to be on their guard against SMS scams after a woman was conned out of R1 850.
Detectives in Pietermaritzburg are making an urgent appeal for information regarding the whereabouts of the man pictured as they believe he can assist them with the case.
It is alleged that on January 28, a 48-year-old woman received an SMS saying she had won R350 000. To claim her prize, she was instructed to call a cellphone number supplied in the SMS.
“The victim contacted the number and the caller convinced her to pay R1 850 into an account to receive her winnings.
“The victim deposited the cash and contacted the number again to confirm payment,” said the police’s Thulani Zwane.
The woman was then told she had to wait for the claim to be processed. Later, the woman tried to contact the number, but the calls went straight to voicemail.
Police are appealing to anyone that can assist with information regarding the incident or information regarding the whereabouts of the man to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Mervin Anthony, at 033 845 2782 or 073 020 3520, or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
