From Atteridgeville, Ga-Rankuwa, Hammanskraal to Mamelodi, much of Tshwane was on fire for most of Tuesday. The only sections spared were Centurion and surrounds, as well as the city centre and eastern parts of the city. Roads were blockaded and cars, buses and delivery trucks stoned or burned.

Whether Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Mapiti Matsena or Thoko Didiza wins the city for the ANC and becomes mayor after the August 3 municipal elections, the day will be remembered as one of the most tumultuous in modern-day South Africa.
