Not to brag but, back in ’varsity getting girls was an easy sport. Well, not easy as in they were always willing, but more like it was an interesting challenge.
I had a posse of dudes and we would meet and brainstorm on how to lure the gal one of us was interested in. We didn’t always catch our prey, but that was of no consequence, it was the meticulous planning that got us really excited.
In hindsight it all sounds silly, but there still are men who hang on to that kind of behaviour way after their college years.
Any woman reading this may find the subject shallow and childish, but I am sure many guys out there understand what I am writing about. As Will Smith’s character Alex in Hitch asked: “Does it ever occur to women that maybe a guy might like to have a plan, you know, because he’s nervous? He’s not sure that he could just walk up to you and you would respond if he said: ‘I like you, I like you, I like you!’”
This movie released after our tertiary education, but we totally understood what it was about. We understood every other movie on courtship that came out including Breaking all the Rules, What Women Want and Two Can Play that Game.
So although I have lost touch with some of my ’varsity buddies, I am sure wherever they are they, too, are excited to watch Men at Work, a sitcom that zooms in on four men who are trying their best to bounce back on to the dating scene.
Meet Milo (Danny Masterson), Tyler (Michael Cassidy), Neal (Adam Busch) and Gibbs (James Lesure), who are best friends all working at the same company.
Milo has just broken up with his lovely girlfriend and to bounce back on to the dating scene he gets help in the form of motivation and ideas from his boys.
However, interestingly, as was the case with my crew back in ’varsity, only one guy knows what he is talking about because he has a real, living girl.
Neal is dating Amy (Meredith Hagner) and sometimes her feminine viewpoint on the boys’ plans provides an interesting perspective on things.
As much as some people may hate the idea of guys planning their approaches on women, this comedy will give you a funny way to look at it.
And to the ladies, if you think you have heard the cheesiest pick-up lines, you ain’t seen nothing yet. On this comedy these dudes are up for the Bad Approach Awards. They make every guy a little more sure about their game.
That said, sometimes stupidity pays and someone in the crew gets lucky, but the question is: After how long?
