This is in the nature of a little lecture

A story on IOL Lifestyle yesterday about what to do at an accident scene, and the importance of learning first aid, reminded me of the time I saved my son’s life.

A friend who is a paediatric nurse runs two-hour infant first aid courses. I did one because I thought it was a good idea and, if I’m honest, because it was easy. All I had to do was go to her house one Saturday morning.

Of course, I should not have sat up drinking the night before and I should not have been crouching on her lounge floor with a baby doll and a hangover. But I did it, and left, convinced I would remember nothing.

Some months later, I was in the kitchen when in wandered my two-year-old, red in the face and making strange choking noises.

I grabbed him and performed the Heimlich manoeuvre for little kids, and a small plastic nut from his construction toy set popped out his mouth.

Somehow, the knowledge gained on that Saturday morning was still in my brain and a potential fatality was turned into an instructive dinner party story.

So - the moral is, just to do a first aid course. Don’t argue, just do it.
