London - One in five teenagers “almost always” wakes up during the night to use Facebook or Twitter, say researchers.

This regular disruption makes some children more tired in lessons than very late bedtimes. It also affects their happiness, with lower well-being reported by those who wake to use social networks.

The Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods surveyed 412 pupils of 12 and 13 and 436 aged 14 and 15. Asked how often they wake to use social media, 22 percent of 12 and 13-year-olds and 23 percent of those aged 14 and 15 said “almost always”.

The findings will be presented tomorrow to the British Educational Research Association at Queen’s University, Belfast.
