London - The end to restless nights could be in sight after the discovery of a switch in the brain that triggers sleep.

Oxford University researchers claim it is set off by falling levels of chemical dopamine, which is known to keep people awake.

The breakthrough could be used to help treat sleep disorders such as insomnia.

The team studied fruit flies – thought to have the same sleep-control neurons as humans – and found that, when they stopped dopamine delivery and waited, the sleep-control neuron flipped and the fly went to sleep.
