Johannesburg - South Africans following a low-carb lifestyle will be delighted by Woolworths’ new CarbClever range.

The nine microwavable meals, a soup and three vegetable dishes will be introduced nationwide, says the retailer. They contain no pasta, potatoes or rice, nor do they have wheat, grains, legumes or pulses. It’s just seasonal vegetables and a spicy protein in creamy sauces.

Admittedly, the meals are expensive – the Thai Red Chicken Curry meal costs R58.95, and much of the package was nothing more than air, while the shepherd’s and cottage pies, which use cauliflower mash instead of potato, cost R47.95 and R45.95 respectively.

Cauliflower mash is also sold on its own for R34.95, and will surely be a favourite of Banting followers.

Generally, the range has been well received online. @SamBuchler tweeted that the cauliflower and gruyere soup was “life changing”, while Lexi Monzeglio (@leximonz) said she couldn’t contain her excitement.

Futhi Dali (@FuthiDali) bemoaned the fact that there were no vegetarian ready-made meals, while blogger Chris von Ulmenstein said the range was not “Banting clever” as it contained ingredients banned from that diet.

Most health-conscious people will love the range, though.
