Durban - How the dating game has changed!

Where people used to meet their partners at clubs, bars or even the supermarket, it’s now far more common to meet your significant other on the internet. And there are numerous apps available which make online dating fun, easy and safe.

Hinge

We’ve all been there: having a crush on a Facebook friend or a friend of a friend. Enter Hinge, which will match you with either your Facebook friend or their friends on the social media site. The only catch is you need to have a mutual connection for it to work.

Unlike Tinder and Grindr, you aren’t trying to date a stranger, but someone you may have met or even chatted to, but didn’t have the guts to ask out. As the app states on its website: “We believe in keeping things real. Hinge helps you meet real people, through your real friends, in real life. Just like a house party, dinner or wedding.”

Bumble

It’s a leap year and apparently that means women everywhere should be making the first move. This app basically makes this happen.

Created by Tinder’s co-creator, Whitney Wolfe, Bumble is a lot like Tinder except that if you finally find your match, the woman has to make contact first. The match disappears after 24 hours, so you have to be pretty quick and strike up a conversation if you’re interested.

Sweatt

If you don’t like people who post gym selfies and keep you in the loop regarding how many kilometres they’ve “smashed” on the treadmill, then Sweatt is not for you.

As you might have guessed from the name, it’s for serious exercise devotees. Sweatt will match you with someone who has the same fitness beliefs as you. The app asks its users about their preferred workout methods, their gym frequency and their diet of choice.

The League

If you went to a private school, went to Dubai for half a term and then went to Rhodes, this app is for you.

It’s the Ivy League of dating apps. It’s discreet and uses your Facebook and LinkedIn data to verify whether you can join.

Because it’s serious about being for privileged people, there’s little chance of getting gold diggers on the app. It may be elitist, but I guess we all like dating people we can relate to.
