Make your tie make your day

Durban – They’re often the last thing we pick out when we are putting an outfit together, but ties, bowties and even air ties can make or break your entire look.

Ties have been around for centuries, we have seen them evolve into a fashion accessory, a statement piece or become a part of a uniform. From colours to prints, long ties and short ties, self clip bow ties and of course the traditional do it yourself tie, they have come a long way. Here is a quick guide on how to get it right

The bow tie

There are three basic types of bow ties: the self-tie, clip-on and pre-tied. If you are able to dress yourself then avoid the pre-tied bow.

Stay away from screaming colours. The basic rule of wearing a bow tie is to have it in sync with the rest of your outfit. Your bow tie must not, under any circumstance be so bright that it distracts people from your face. It should compliment your look and emphasise your style, not make you look like a clown.

They can be dark and muted or add a bit on a fancy note as the occasion demands.

Ties

Apart from your face, people will notice your tie first and if they like it, “nice tie” is sure to follow.

Your tie should not be a novelty, it must complement your outfit and be a part of it. No matter how tall or short you are, the tip of your tie must hit your beltline. Doritos are great but they are best kept as chips and not as the knot of your tie.

The Air Tie

This is basically a suit or shirt worn without a tie, as seen on Ryan Gosling. Why it is called an air tie no one really knows, all it is, is buttoning your shirt all the way to the top button.

Now as simple as it might sound, you could end up looking weird if you don’t pair it with the correct suit or even with the right shirt. This look works best with a semi-spread-collar shirt and a killer suit or blazer.
