Rami Malek was one of the surprise winners at this year’s Emmys, beating heavyweights like Kevin Spacey.

In an unexpected result at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Rami Malek took home the coveted best actor in a drama series award. Up against industry legends like Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) and Liev Schreiber ( Ray Donovan) the young actor plays an intense, highly intelligent, socially awkward hacker, Eliot Alderson, in award-winning series Mr Robot.

Eliot is depressed, anxious, and on medication – and his tics are made worse when he takes drugs (like morphine and un-prescribed pharmaceuticals). This was Rami Malek’s first nomination and his convincing portrayal of this anti-social anti-hero makes him a deserving winner.

His acceptance speech paid tribute to society’s misfits, the men and women who don’t fit the mould: “I play a young man who is, like so many of us, profoundly alienated. And the unfortunate thing is I'm not sure how many of us would want to hang out with a guy like Elliot. But I want to honour the Elliots, cause there's a little bit of Elliot in all of us."
