Durban - She’s the Queen Bee of local fund-raising, with all the right connections and know-how, and once again Sandy Day has Durban abuzz with her latest project.
The fashion designer, who has always been an avid event organiser and supporter of local charities, has been co-ordinating the fashion show for the Big Fat Greek Tea Party since its inception three years ago.
The tea, with the fashion show as its drawcard, takes place at the Hellenic Cultural Centre in Durban North on March 7 at 8.30am and is in aid of the Hellenic Welfare Society of KwaZulu-Natal.
This year Day devised a fashion challenge for some of Durban’s top designers. Each of them was tasked with creating a free-fitting, resort-style garment from donated fabric for the tea party.
Acclaimed designers such as Francois Vedemme, Karen Monk Klijnstra, Terrence Bray, Christa White, Kevin Ellis, Kathrin Kidger and Haroun Hansrot have created sumptuous outfits including kaftans, wrap dresses and tunics.
Selling the garments
Each of them stands a chance to win generous prizes from sponsor Tsogo Sun. The garments will be sold at the tea to raise funds for the welfare society.
Run solely on donations, subscriptions and fund-raising by eight volunteers, the society is dedicated to helping the needy and elderly people.
Now in its 40th year, it is looking to grow. The society has acquired a property in Durban North where it intends to set up a home. Funds from the Big Fat Greek Tea Party will go towards renovations and running costs. - Omeshnie Naidoo, The Mercury
