London - At first glance, it seems as though Amal Clooney has gone for the chop.

But as you might expect, this international lawyer has actually done something much more clever.

Instead of reaching for the scissors to achieve her shorter bobbed do, she has curled her long hair under and tucked it neatly at the back of her head.

The style is known as an “under roll”, and resembles the look made popular in the 1940s by stars such as Lauren Bacall.

Mrs Clooney paired her vintage curls with a modern skater dress on Monday night, as she attended the Los Angeles premiere of her husband George Clooney’s latest film Hail, Caesar!

The outfit by Giambattista Valli had intricate red flower details round the waist, to match her bright lipstick. And it is a design she clearly favours, as the dress was strikingly similar to one by the same designer that she wore during her 2014 wedding celebrations in Venice.

Its latest incarnation was custom altered, but was inspired by catwalk collections with a similar version costing around £2 220 (about R48 000).

Clooney, who plays movie star Baird Whitlock in his new film, also appears to be a fan of the look, leaning in for a kiss as they arrived on the red carpet.

Speaking about Mrs Clooney’s creative hairstyle, expert Charlotte Harwood said: “This style is great for people with long hair. Without going to the extreme of cutting it all off, you have all the options of trying out new looks.”

She added that tucking the hair underneath creates “volume and thickness”.
