London - She could have her pick of expensive lotions and potions.

But actress and comedian Dawn French has revealed she would rather stick to the basics used by her mother and grandmother – a muslin cloth and pot of Nivea.

The 58-year-old Vicar of Dibley star said she had tried a pot of Crème de la Mer, the celebrity favourite which costs a huge £595 (about R12 600) for 250ml, but could see no difference.

She added: “I can’t bring myself to buy expensive creams as I have my mother in my ear saying ‘It’s exactly the same as Nivea’.”

Speaking about her down-to-earth beauty regime, she said: “There is no secret is there? Your face is from your parents.

“You can use a bit of cream and I think we have all found out that Nivea is as good as Crème de la Mer. I think I have used both things and they are pretty much the same.”

She added: “One thing I do is clean my face with a muslin cloth. My grandmother always did that. It is the best way to get any rubbish off your face.”
