Hollywood hair stylist to the stars Chris Naselli was recently in Cape town to share his expertise with a select few as a special guest of hair and salon products TRESemmé.

He speaks to us about his career, hair trends and what’s it like working with some of Hollywood A-Listers.

Tell us a little about yourself? I was born and raised in New York City, and I still live there today. I own a salon in the East Village and work with celebrities and the fashion crowd all over the country and world. I also love to travel and meeting inspiring people and new cultures - it feeds creativity. I also have two mini schnauzers named Gertie and Mabel.

Did you always want to be a hairstylist? No not at all. I was home from college one summer confused and not sure about what I really wanted to do. So my mom, who was a hairdresser, suggested I go to hair school. I thought she was crazy but I gave it a try and the rest is history.

What is the toughest part of your job? Being away from home. I am constantly on the go from city to city, country to country. I love to travel and meet interesting creative people but it's hard to be away from home for long stretches.

What do you enjoy the most about working as a hairstylist? The brilliantly creative people that I get to work with all over the world. You always find great people who end up becoming great friends.

You have worked with so many famous people. Is there anyone that stands out as your favourite from a hairstylist stand point?

Shameless star Emmy Rossum is a muse. She is a gorgeous chameleon and her beauty blows me away. And she also loves to take risks and push boundaries - a hairdresser's dream.

What are your biggest hair dos and don'ts? Don't ever be afraid of change, it's a good thing. Big thick and chunky highlights are a massive don't in my book. Just say no.

What's the one hair care tool you simply can't live without? My curling wand. It’s the best!!! It can do everything.

Which hairstyles are the most popular right now? Natural texture with lots of soft volume is incredibly popular this season. Either down in glam waves or used to create a bold braid. But it all starts with the right volume.

Quick fixes on bad hair day? A loose braid can fix any bad hair day - and set your mood right.

Your quick get up and go styles one can do to save time. A top knot is a girl's best friend. Or a loose high ponytail can be super chic and easy.

The most popular hair lengths right now? In my salon I have been pushing my girls to cut their hair right above the shoulder just enough so you can see through it. It's versatile and sexy and everyone can wear it well.

Trendy hair colours right now? One dimensional brunettes are happening. Natural blondes with soft baby highlights that frame the face are also trending.

What do you love most about being a stylist? Being able to change the way people look. And feel about themselves. You can see people light up when they feel great about how they look.
