Durban - Celebrity designer Rohit Verma was in Durban this week to showcase his latest collection which combined, in keeping with Eastern tradition, an array of bright, colourful designs and the use of soft textures.

Verma, of India, also presented his designer abayas, which are full-length outer garments worn by some Muslim women. The flamboyant designer, who showcased in South Africa for the first time, dresses local celebrities. He said people appreciated his garments because of their bold designs. “I love creating bold things that people will love,” he said.

The Bollywood Fashion Fusion at Suncoast Cinecentre not only had international designers in its line-up, it also attracted international and local celebrities who headlined the show. The event was held in aid of the Twilight Children’s Home in Johannesburg.

Supermodel and actor, Upen Patel, who has starred in movies such as 36 China Town and Namaste London and has modelled for Hugo Boss, was master of ceremonies. The star said he was enjoying his first time in Durban and was honoured to be a part of the project.

Many designers added modern elements to traditional Indian and Middle Eastern garments, with some choosing seductive slits and funky harem pants.

Another hit were jewels showcased by designer, Akshar Choudree, modelled by local actress, Kajol Bhagwandeen. From crystal rings to chunky silver neckpieces, Choudree’s jewellery was sophisticated and classy.

Other designers of the evening included Mumbai-based Nyshaa, who showcased her collection for the first time in South Africa. Although Nyshaa stuck to traditional Indian punjabis and saris, she added to modern elements.

Mora Ammor designs by Mohammed Amod of Durban oozed elegance and modernism. Local Durban dance group, XDC, entertained guests and were choreographed to perfection. - Daily News
