London - Not many women in their 50s, getting married for the second time, could carry off bare legs and a white dress that didn’t even cover the knees. But somehow, Nancy Shevell managed it at her marriage to Paul McCartney. While short, it wasn’t indecently short, and the long-sleeves and a demure V-neckline gave an overall impression of modesty.

Simple, and elegant, with some delicate folds across the bust, and a flatteringly cut waist panel, it suited her perfectly.

The covered buttons at the sleeves and down the front were reminiscent of a similar detail that caught the attention of the cameras at the Royal Wedding earlier this year - the back of Pippa Middleton’s bridesmaid outfit was decorated in the same fashion.

When it came to accessories, she also got it right. Kitten heels are the sensible choice for a bride who wants to be able to walk - and not tower over her groom. A flower in her hair was an elegant alternative to a fussy fascinator, and some simple drop earrings completed the look.

But perhaps the most important detail was the label on the dress - Stella McCartney. When Sir Paul married Heather Mills in 2002, rumours about family rows over the dress were rife and the bride eventually wore one she’d designed herself and had made up by Eavis & Brown. That Nancy was wearing Stella on her wedding day was surely a clear sign of just how much more approved of she is. - Daily Mail
